Spirit Walk: A Meditation in Action

The simple act of walking has many rewards. It’s a great low-impact, cardio workout, an environmentally conscious mode of transportation, and walking is a wonderful moving meditation. I am able to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature and feel the sun, wind, or mist, all while being intensely aware of my body.

Yet, walking meditation to me is more than just taking a leisurely stroll through the park. The result is a deep awareness of the body that carries through to a heightened awareness of my daily life.

I live within a mile to a local park, bakery, restaurants, goodies store and many more: close enough that my feet are my transportation. My travel time would be greatly reduced if I rode my bike or a car instead of walking, and several times I have been asked why I do not do that. My reply has always been that I enjoy walking.

My morning walks give me a chance to clear my head. I could worry about many things – family, people I’m mad at, money, or whatever is going on in my life that needs to be worried over, but I don’t. Why? Because there’s nothing I can do about it while I’m walking. I have to get from my house to wherever I am going and back: the trip is not something that I can in any way avoid. Therefore, my walk is a necessary and inescapable part whenever I need to get something from the store, bakery or just to go walking at the park. I use it to relax. Mostly I use it to breathe. My walk is the one time each day that I can let my mind wander – tension-free and where it will – and I can’t make myself feel guilty about it because I am doing something that needs to be done.

Even if I always have enough time during the day to sit down and meditate or develop my creativity or whatever other endeavors the majority of the world would deem useless, unproductive, or a waste of time; my walk is the one other thing that is the most plausible excuse I give the rest of the world so that I can truly be me for a little while each day.

Besides, I have shared so many beautiful sunsets and sunrises with the birds; I have watched the leaves fall with the squirrels; I have seen many rising sun bring such a glow of beauty out of a tree that I swore I was in heaven.

My walk gave these gifts to me.

  2. I surely could have written this post.
    My sentiments, exactly.
    Each morning, and I do mean each morning, I walk about 5 miles. It is honestly the best thing that I do for myself on most days.
    I start at just about 5am, because I love being out there when virtually no one else is around. It is always, always such a good experience.
