Rocky Cola Cafe in Whittier

When you’re experiencing everything that good ol’ Uptown Whittier has to offer, from its vintage shops, to its record stores, to its colorful clientele, it’s easy to work up an appetite. And what better place to fill it at than a good ol’ fashioned 50’s diner? The food is mostly standard fare– nothing to write home about, nothing particularly impressive. Maybe this means my palette is not the most discerning or maybe it just means that I like to have fun! Each table has a little jukebox that you put money into, select a song, and wait for it to come on the restaurant’s main sound system. Rocky Cola tends to attract a rockabilly crowd, many folks with tattoos, punk kids hanging out in the neighborhood, as well as families. It’s sort of great equalizer. I love Rocky Cola, even if it’s not the best food in the world. As long as there’s fun stuff to do in Uptown Whittier, I couldn’t imagine eating anywhere else while I’m there! This isn’t a place that you would …

Seasonal Coffee at Starbucks

Graham and sweet cream meet steamed milk and our signature espresso, then are finished off with a sprinkling of cinnamon graham crumbles for a less sweet perfect treat. – Starbucks For me, coffee is a must after a run, a walk or a hike. I make sure that all the calories I lose from my outdoor activities are immediately replaced. While it may seem funny to others, this is always the case for me. So today, after an especially strenuous 3-mile walk, I stopped by my Starbucks corner and ordered one of their newly released seasonal offerings, Toasted Graham Latte (TGL for short). Here is my usual dialogue with the familiar barista. Barista: Hi good morning, what can I get for you today? Me: TGL Grande, pumpkin cream cheese muffin and a feta cheese both on plates please. Barista: You want the muffin warmed up? Me: Yes please.. and can you make the TGL skinny? half syrup and easy on the whip please, and I’d like Pike Place as my base. Barista: We don’t put …

U-Pick Strawberry

Conveniently located near the 5 fwy in Carlsbad, you can just buy strawberries, or spend an hour picking your own.  It’s a fun pit stop. These farmers have it all figured out, we pay twice as much for the strawberries and do the picking ourselves! But, once you get beyond the obvious I’m-a-sucker feeling, you realize what a fun activity this is. The best part about picking your own strawberries? 100% guarantee that they will be amazingly sweet and fresh. Taking a blind shot at a store, dearly hoping, that the packaged strawberries will offer even half the amount of sweetness pales by contrast. We bought a $20 bucket and already had 1/4 of the strawberries were gone when we got home! This year, we thought we were too early in going and that the strawberries were just too young but were delighted to find a good amount of big, plump strawberries. I do think that late April, early May is the best time to go. I suggest bringing your beach things if you are driving …

Sanamluang Café

If you love Thai Cuisine, then this place might be just for you. I always feel as if I’m eating real comfort food and so far I have never been disappointed. I especially love their salted fish fried rice and I keep going back for that reason alone. That spicy sauce is so good! And their sticky rice with mango is a dream. I think the service is good considering how busy they are. Just ask, and you will get what you want. I can overlook the orange plastic plates because the food is fantastic. Located in Pomona means you will find it in a most ghetto area. As the cliché goes, don’t judge a book by its looks

left-over from hsi lai temple

I still found some left-over photos from the Hsi Lai Temple visit. This one made me think of Facebookers considered as Lurker-judger 🙂 And for coffee, hhhmmm… yum that sweet potatoes & sbux coffee. They really go well together. Have a nice weekend everyone!

sweet little things

Today is my daughter’s 15th birthday but we gave her party over the weekend so family and friends can come. And this is also why I was so partly busy… because of the pretty little things I’ve made for the kids and adults too.  There were more real foods but I don’t want to bomb your dashboards with loads of calories, there is enough in here already.

red festive cups

Today’s coffee: I didn’t want to miss their last day on the “buy 1 get 1 free” promo on holiday drinks, so I went today. I got myself one hot skinny peppermint mocha & a frappucino for the take one, all for me. Starbucks propos, my friend would say… but I love ’em red festive cups. And since I skipped… Yesterday’s coffee: Hazelnut latte less sugar from McD right after I trailed the Hacienda hills. And yes, I do love their red festive cups too & whatever propos on it are working on me.
